Ascent vs generic job boards
How a map of funded startups differs from a general job board — what each is good for, and when to use which.
Updated 4 min read
General job boards are excellent at volume: almost every company posts there, in every city and sector. Ascent does something narrower on purpose. Here's an honest comparison so you can use each for what it's best at.
At a glance
| Generic job boards | Ascent | |
|---|---|---|
| Who's listed | Any employer, including agencies and large corporates | Funded and accelerator-backed startups in London and San Francisco |
| How you browse | Search results and lists | A map of real offices by neighbourhood, plus a jobs list |
| Salary and visa | Shown when the employer chooses to | Shown on every role where we have it; filter by salary and visa |
| Company context | Usually a short employer page | A full profile: stage, funding, offices, perks, every open role |
| Where you apply | Often on the board itself | Always on the company's own site — we link straight there |
| Paid placements | Varies by board | Paid placements are always labelled Featured |
| Places to work from | Not covered | Cafés, libraries and coworking spaces with Wi-Fi, plugs and noise notes |
When a general job board is the better tool
- You want the widest possible net, across company sizes and sectors.
- You're looking outside London and San Francisco.
- You want to apply to many roles quickly through one account.
When Ascent is the better tool
- You want to work at an early-stage or scaling startup specifically.
- Location matters — you want to see who's hiring near you, or in the neighbourhood you're moving to.
- You need salary or visa information before you invest time in an application.
- You want to follow companies and hear when they open roles, not just search once.
How we keep listings useful
Roles come from the companies' own careers pages and applicant tracking systems, and we re-check them regularly. Roles that disappear from the source are removed. Startups can claim their profile for free to correct details, and verified profiles are marked as such.
Use both
Most people find their next role through a mix of channels. Use a big board for breadth, and use Ascent to understand the startups behind the roles — where they are, what they pay, and whether they can sponsor you.
